Synopsis/Summary:
In the magical underworld of Victorian London, Tessa Gray has at last found safety with the Shadowhunters. But that safety proves fleeting when rogue forces in the Clave plot to see her protector, Charlotte, replaced as head of the Institute. If Charlotte loses her position, Tessa will be out on the street—and easy prey for the mysterious Magister, who wants to use Tessa’s powers for his own dark ends.
Tessa finds her heart drawn more and more to Jem, but her longing for Will, despite his dark moods, continues to unsettle her. But something is changing in Will—the wall he has built around himself is crumbling. Could finding the Magister free Will from his secrets and give Tessa the answers about who she is and what she was born to do?
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐/5
Cassandra Clare’s brilliance shines once again with this addicting masterpiece.
Clockwork Prince is the second book of The Infernal Devices and so far it is my favorite of the three. Be aware that this book is the calm before the storm, and when I say storm I refer to Clockwork Princes ;) After finding that the war that the Magister is creating is partly because of some particular interest with Tessa, she is tempted to know more about her history and unravel the secret the Magister is keeping from her.
In the first place, I literally fell in love with the characters after reading this book. It took me to a point where I sobbed for days because they are just fictional characters that will never be alive anywhere except in my head, and maybe yours too.
Jem Castairs’s sweetness mixed with his noble and respectable heart. He is so fragile you want to merge with the pages and comfort him with a simple hug, but at the same time, you know he is so strong and wise, always fighting against and for the disease running through his veins; knowing he doesn’t have many years left to live, but yet he still draws a smile on his delicate face for the people he loves.
Will Herondale’s determination and the fact that you can spot the resemblance between him and Jace Herondale (protagonist on The Mortal Instruments’s saga). Even though they own traits that differentiate them from each other, you are able to perceive the Herondale’s features in both of them; How they use their humor and sarcasm to hide all the suffering they have to bear all alone because of their persistence of showing themself as tenacious and capable. Furthermore, in this book, you will see little by little the destruction of the walls Will had built because of a certain something (which I will not spoil) in which you are able to have a view of the thunderstorm he goes through every day. It is so vivid and sorrowful, that you will feel your heartstrings being tugged by Cassandra Clare and her intense characters. When you find out what it is, you will find yourself rooting for Mr. Will Herondale.
On the other side, there are all those other characters: Sophie, Charlotte, Henry, Gideon who are so cute and I believe that without them the novel would not be half as good as it is. They make the story perfect because perfection is what describes them. What made me treasure the characters even more in this novel is that you are able to have a view of the progress they made as individuals from the previous book to this one.
Okay, now the end. The end was the best thing I saw in ages. Prepare (again) that package of tissues you have in your drawer because you will require it. I usually don’t cry with books, yes they affect me really hard, but in order for a book to make me weep as this one did, it has to be really emotionally intense to me and very well accomplished. Just another warning in case you need it ;)
I believe that it only takes reading the first book in order to be persuaded to read the second one, but if you need a little push to open Clockwork Prince, there you have it, thank me later. Now go and immerse yourself in London’s down world because regret will be one of the few emotions you will not feel.
